About This clinical research study
We are currently conducting a study to test a medication for people with Parkinson’s Disease Dementia (sometimes called Parkinson’s Dementia).
What is Parkinson’s Disease Dementia? It is a decline in thinking and reasoning that develops in many people living with Parkinson’s at least a year after diagnosis.
The research team at MAC Clinical Research are conducting a trial to study an existing medication to see if the treatment may help with cognition, for example with attention, remembering, thinking and problem-solving, in the hope that it may be repurposed as a potential new treatment for Parkinson’s dementia.
People living with Parkinson’s dementia often experience changes in concentration, attention, alertness, and wakefulness from day to day and sometimes throughout the day. His or her flow of ideas may be disorganized, unclear, or illogical at times. The person may seem better one day, then worse the next day. Researchers are investigating this treatment for Parkinson’s dementia, in the hope that it may help with some of these symptoms.
Developing a brand-new medicine takes an enormous amount of time, money and effort. Getting a promising new medication into an approved medication can take around 14 years. It is crucial to advance strategies to reduce this time frame and improve success rates and medicine repurposing is one such strategy (sometimes called drug repositioning).
Medication approved for other conditions have already been tested in people, so detailed information is available on their safety. Because repurposing builds upon previous research and development efforts, new therapies could be ready for large clinical trials quickly, speeding up their integration into health care.

A full description of the study would be given to you before you decide to take part, both over the phone and during an appointment at the MAC clinic. This will include you receiving the full patient information sheet (PIS). Your GP will also be notified of your participation.
If you contact us, it does not mean you have to decide at that point whether to participate.
If you do decide to participate you are free to withdraw at any time.

All eligible participants will receive the study medication at some point during the trial.
Reimbursement: £680 plus travel expenses are reimbursed, or travel in a taxi is provided.
Key Inclusion Criteria
- Age 50 - 80
- Diagnosis of Parkinson’s dementia
- The participant must have a study partner. This is someone who routinely accompanies and/or stays with the subject 12 hours or more a week and is able to accompany the subject to clinic visits
Key Exclusion Criteria
- Unable to attend study visits or comply with study restrictions
Other eligibility criteria will apply. Please contact MAC for more information.
Eligible patients will receive a comprehensive health screen and study participation will be in collaboration with the patient’s treating physician.
ABOUT CLINICAL RESEARCH STUDIES
Clinical research studies are performed as a way of bringing about progress in medicine and research. Clinical research studies make it possible to scientifically assess the properties of a drug, to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of a treatment or a medical device, or to learn more about a disease and methods to diagnose and monitor it.
If the study is successful, it may be an important step towards developing a promising new treatment.
