About This clinical research study

If you, or a loved one, have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), sometimes referred to as AD disease, Alzheimer’s or Alzheimer’s dementia, or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) where the cause has been identified as Alzheimer’s you may be interested in a clinical Alzheimer’s trial running at MAC Clinical Research, investigating a potential Alzheimer’s Disease treatment. We understand registering for a trial, whether as a participant or as a caregiver, can feel stressful and it is important to remember even if you register there is no obligation to take part in a trial, you will be supported throughout the trial by trained MAC staff, and you can withdraw your consent at any time, without question.

AD is a neurodegenerative condition and is the most common type of dementia. The stages of Alzheimer’s Disease, classified as mild stage, moderate stage and severe stage. Often Alzheimer’s Disease symptoms, particularly early onset Alzheimer’s symptoms, include mild to moderate memory loss with an initial diagnosis being MCI. It is important to note MCI can be due to other causes and would need to be ruled out before a probable diagnosis of AD can be established. Your GP, specialist healthcare provider, or Memory Assessment Research Centres (MARCs – such as at MAC Clinical Research) would be able to provide this by identifying further Alzheimer’s symptoms and ruling out other causes. Other AD symptoms include challenges to planning and problem solving, confusion with time and places and changes in mood and personality and up to 50% diagnoses will experience symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations.

There is currently no cure for AD but Alzheimer’s medications are available to help manage and slow the development of symptoms.

The investigational medicine is being developed for the treatment of psychosis (delusions and hallucinations) in Alzheimer’s. This study will assess the safety, tolerability of the investigational medicine, as well as how it interacts with the body; it has previously been tested in adults and elderly volunteers with no significant health conditions.

It is hoped the investigational medicine will reduce symptoms of psychosis; previous clinical and non-clinical studies support further investigation to assess this. Eligible participants for this clinical trial must be able to continue their Alzheimer’s medicines (the study doctor will discuss this).

Reimbursement: Participants will receive up to £1595, based on completed visits, plus reasonable travel costs, or transport to clinic visits will also be provided.
