Vulvodynia

About This clinical research study

Vulvodynia is a vulvar pain disorder, which causes hurting during penetration which can be pain during tampon use, discomfort during intercourse or even with just touch. Symptoms of vulvar pain include feelings of burning, throbbing, stabbing or soreness which can be constant or intermittent, for example, having pain during sex. When pain or burning during penetration, that is at the opening of the vagina, this is known as vestibulodynia. Exact causes of vulvodynia are not widely known, and it is often difficult to diagnose as other conditions need to be ruled out first, for example vaginitis, STI’s or dyspareunia (painful sexual intercourse). For more information there are vulvodynia and vestibulodynia NHS resources available online – Vulvodynia (vulval pain) – NHS.

If you have a diagnosis or have experienced symptoms consistent with vulvodynia or vestibulodynia for at least 12 months you may be interested in a clinical trial investigating a potential vulvodynia treatment running at MAC. Sometimes referred to as provoked vulvodynia, vestibular vulvodynia or localised vulvodynia, symptoms might include genital/vaginal/pelvic pain during sex, in particular penetration, foreplay, on insertion of a tampon, (or other forms of vaginal penetration), physical touch, cycling, or simply when wearing tight underwear, jeans or just when sitting down.

Vulvodynia or vestibulodynia treatment could include types of antidepressants, anticonvulsants, steroid injections or numbing ointments. This clinical trial will evaluate the investigational medicinal products (IMP) effect on pain in the vestibule when caused by insertion (provoked vestibulodynia). The IMP is a novel medication which increases dopamine (a chemical messenger found naturally in the body which is believed to play a role in pain modulation) levels in the body.

The trial is placebo (an inactive medicine) controlled whether you receive the IMP or placebo is determined by chance, known as randomisation. Participants in the study will need to attend 7x outpatient visits across a duration of a maximum of 98 days. Participants may be permitted to continue some medications for the treatment of their vulval pain during the course of the trial (conditions will apply).
