About The Research...

We are currently conducting a study to test a medication for people with Parkinson’s disease who experience sleep problems such as lucid/vivid dreams or re-enact dreams in their sleep. This is sometimes diagnosed as Rapid eye movement (REM) Sleep behaviour disorder (RBD).

Parkinson’s disease is defined as a condition in which the brain cells that produce Dopamine; a chemical responsible for movement, stop working properly and are lost over time.  Parkinson’s symptoms start to appear when the brain can’t make enough dopamine to control movement properly.

Sleep disorders are commonly found to occur in people living with Parkinson’s. People can physically act out vivid, often unpleasant dreams with vocal sounds and sudden, sometimes violent arm and leg movements during sleep. This is sometimes called dream-enacting behaviour.

The purpose of the trial is to test a medication that is already on the market for another condition, in the hope that it may be repurposed as a potential new treatment for Parkinson’s.

Developing a brand-new medication takes an enormous amount of time, money and effort. Getting a promising new medication into an approved drug can take around 14 years. It is crucial to advance strategies to reduce this time frame, decrease costs and improve success rates and drug repurposing is one such strategy.

Medication approved for other conditions have already been tested in people, so detailed information is available on their safety. Because repurposing builds upon previous research and development efforts, new therapies could be ready for large clinical trials quickly, speeding up their integration into health care.

All eligible participants will receive the study medication at some point during the trial.

A full description of the study would be given to you before you decide to take part, both over the phone and during an appointment at the MAC clinic. This will include you receiving the full patient information sheet (PIS). Your GP will also be notified of your participation.
