About The Research...

We are currently conducting a study to test a medication for people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or memory loss/problems, with some mild symptoms of depression.

What is MCI? Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition that causes minor problems with cognition – mental abilities such as memory or thinking.

The research team at MAC Clinical Research are conducting a study into an existing medication to see if the medication may help with cognition, for example with attention, remembering, thinking and problem-solving, in the hope that it may be repurposed as a potential new treatment for memory problems and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment causes cognitive changes that are serious enough to be noticed to the person affected and to family members and friends, but do not affect the individual’s ability to carry out everyday activities. Approximately 15% to 20% of people age 65 or older have MCI.

Developing a brand-new treatment takes an enormous amount of time, money and effort. Getting a promising new medication can take around 14 years. It is crucial to advance strategies to reduce this time frame, decrease costs and improve success rates and medicine repurposing is one such strategy.

Medication approved for other conditions have already been tested in people, so detailed information is available on their safety. Because repurposing builds upon previous research and development efforts, new therapies could be ready for large clinical trials quickly, speeding up their integration into health care.

All eligible participants will receive the study medication at some point during the trial.

A full description of the study would be given to you before you decide to take part, both over the phone and during an appointment at the MAC clinic. This will include you receiving the full patient information sheet (PIS). Your GP will also be notified of your participation.
