About The Research...

What is Parkinson’s disease? It is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years.

The research team at MAC Clinical Research are conducting a study to test an existing medication (that was originally developed for asthma) to see if the medicine may help with cognition in people living with Parkinson’s (for example remembering, thinking and problem-solving).

Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, affecting approximately 1–2% of individuals aged 65 or over. Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which cells that produce Dopamine; a chemical responsible for movement in brain stops, working properly and are lost over time. Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease start to appear when the brain can’t make enough dopamine to control movement properly. Symptoms often start slowly and progress over time.

Medicine repositioning (or repurposing) identifies new disease areas for existing medications that are already on the market.

This medicine ‘repositioning’ has many advantages over traditional medication discovery approaches. It can significantly reduce development time, and as many compounds have demonstrated safety in humans it often avoids the need for large, expensive trials that can take many years to complete.

The study will run at our Manchester clinic and will require 3 outpatient visits and 2 single night residential visits (stopovers) over 9 weeks.

All eligible participants will receive the study medication during one of the two, 7-day treatment periods during the trial.

A full description of the study will be given to you before you decide to take part, both over the phone and during an appointment at the MAC clinic. This will include you receiving the full patient information sheet (PIS). Your GP will also be notified of your participation.
